Whenever I hear talk of heaven, paradise or other lives beyond this mortality, I interpret it as a reflection of people’s greatest fears. Consider the following solutions provided by belief in an afterlife.

Life on earth is pain – Heaven is pain free
Death separates loved ones – in paradise families reunite and live together forever
Financial struggles – Utopia has no poor among them
War, arguments and strife – peace on earth and in heaven;  somebody
else, “God” will fight our battles.
Aging and Dying – immortality, or the fountain of youth
An unjust world – Perfect, final judgment sorts out the wicked once
and for all.
Natural disasters – An imperfect world will be turned into paradise free from those terrifying natural events.

Only when we face our fears do we find true freedom and happiness. Worry and dread are debilitating.
